How We Build Your Pool

Our Pool
Construction Process

Building a custom pool is one of the most complex outdoor construction projects — involving excavation, structural engineering, plumbing, electrical, plastering, and finish work. Our proven six-phase process ensures every pool we build is structurally sound, beautifully finished, and delivered on schedule.

Typical Construction Timeline Most custom pools take 3–6 months from design approval to first swim — depending on scope, permit processing time, and complexity. We provide a detailed schedule before any work begins.

Free Design Consultation

We visit your property, assess the site, discuss your vision and budget, and walk through all design possibilities. We take measurements, check soil conditions, and identify any site-specific challenges — completely free, no obligation.

1–2 Weeks

3D Design & Engineering

Our design team creates detailed 3D renderings of your pool showing exact shape, features, materials, and surroundings. Once you approve the design, our engineers prepare the structural drawings required for permit submission.

2–4 Weeks

Permitting & Approvals

We submit all plans to the City or County of Los Angeles and coordinate with your HOA if applicable. Pool permits in LA typically take 4–8 weeks to process. We manage all inspections throughout construction.

4–8 Weeks

Excavation & Shell Construction

Excavation, steel rebar framework, plumbing rough-in, electrical conduit, and shotcrete or gunite shell application. This structural phase creates the permanent shell of your pool.

2–4 Weeks

Tile, Coping & Decking

Waterline tile installation, coping stone application, and surrounding decking — travertine, natural stone, or concrete. This is where your pool's visual character truly comes to life.

2–3 Weeks

Equipment, Plaster & First Swim

Equipment installation and startup, interior plaster or Pebble Tec application, water filling, chemical balance, and final inspection. We walk you through your system before handing over the keys — and the pool.

What Affects the Cost of Your Pool in Los Angeles

Pool Size & Shape

Larger pools and complex freeform shapes require more excavation, steel, concrete, and finishing work — directly increasing cost.

Site Conditions

Hillside lots, expansive soil, poor access, and existing structures can add $15,000–$50,000 to excavation and structural requirements.

Features & Upgrades

Each add-on has real cost: elevated spa (+$20–40K), infinity edge (+$15–30K), water features (+$5–20K), automation (+$5–15K).

Finish Materials

Pebble Tec, glass tile, natural stone, and premium plaster finishes vary significantly in cost and longevity — we guide you to the right selection.

Decking & Landscape

The area surrounding your pool — travertine, concrete, pavers, and landscaping — often represents 30–40% of the total project budget.

Permits

Los Angeles pool permits range from $3,000–$8,000. We include full permit management in every project with no additional management fee.

Pool Construction
FAQ

Custom pool construction in Greater Los Angeles typically ranges from $80,000 for a plunge pool to $300,000–$600,000+ for a full resort-style pool with spa, water features, and complete backyard transformation. The biggest cost drivers are pool size, site conditions, features (infinity edge, spa, water features), and surrounding decking and landscape. We provide a detailed estimate during your free consultation.
The full timeline from consultation to first swim is typically 4–7 months. This includes 2–4 weeks for design, 4–8 weeks for permit processing with the City of Los Angeles, and 8–14 weeks of physical construction. Complex projects with infinity edges, grottos, or full landscape work may take longer. We provide a detailed project schedule before any work begins.
Yes — all pool construction in Los Angeles requires building permits and must comply with California building codes and local ordinances. Permits are required for the pool structure, plumbing, electrical, and safety barrier (fence). 4 Seasons manages the entire permit process including engineering drawings, plan check submissions, and all required inspections — you never have to deal with the permit office yourself.
Saltwater pools are gentler on skin, eyes, and hair, and tend to feel softer to swim in. They still use chlorine — generated automatically by the salt cell — but at lower, more consistent levels than manually dosed pools. They're generally lower maintenance day-to-day, though the salt chlorinator requires periodic maintenance. The upfront cost is slightly higher ($2,000–$4,000 more), but most homeowners in Los Angeles prefer saltwater for the experience.
Yes — we have extensive experience building pools on hillside, canyon, and sloped properties throughout Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Studio City, and the Conejo Valley. Hillside pools often require retaining walls, deeper structural engineering, and sometimes caissons or special footings. They also create the opportunity for dramatic infinity-edge designs. Hillside site conditions typically add $20,000–$80,000 to the project cost depending on the severity of the slope.
Yes — and this is one of our key advantages. As a full design-build firm, we handle the complete backyard transformation: pool, spa, decking, coping, hardscape, outdoor kitchen, pergola, landscape, and lighting. Everything designed as one cohesive environment, built by one team, under one contract. No coordinating between separate pool contractors and landscapers — everything is seamlessly integrated.
